The doctor will see you – and so will the dentist a few doors or floors away. At least that’s the idea of a new, innovative medical and dental model teaming doctors with dentists.
After opening offices and partnering with medical practices in Long Island and in New York City, Lake Success-based ProHEALTH Dental is expanding into New Jersey and forming a clinical affiliation with Riverside Medical Group.
The Long Island-based dental group is teaming with Riverside, a medical practice with about 200 providers serving 250,000 patients at more than 85 locations in Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Middlesex, Burlington, and Camden counties in New Jersey.
As part of this partnership, ProHEALTH Dental is setting up dental practices in buildings that house Riverside’s physician offices, seeking to provide locations for patients seeking doctors and dentists.
ProHEALTH Dental plans to open four dental offices in Hoboken, Edison, Secaucus, and Clifton this year with additional offices planned for next year.
The firm already operates four dental offices and is developing five more on Long Island, typically located near medical practices with which it is affiliated, as well as in Queens and Brooklyn.
ProHEALTH Dental already is affiliated with ProHEALTH Care Associates, a 900-physician practice serving more than 1.2 million patients at 300 locations.
And it has academic and clinical affiliation agreements with The Mount Sinai Health System / Icahn School of Medicine and affiliated practices in Queens and Brooklyn.
The newest alliance lets it expand into New Jersey, as it seeks to partner with physician practices and treat dentistry and medicine as related rather than entirely separate fields.
“We believe that this is the model of the future,” ProHEALTH Dental CEO Norton Travis said in a written statement. “It’s time to break down the historical barrier between medicine and dentistry and have these important healthcare professionals work together to improve the oral and overall health of their patients.”
ProHEALTH Dental seeks to work with medical practices, often locating in the same building, and offering dental services in a way designed to be convenient for those physicians’ patients.
“We can work together to ensure that patients understand the importance of good oral health and provide state-of-the-art dental services to the patients and communities they serve,” Travis continued in a written statement.
Riverside touted the teaming as a way to better serve patients, providing a more convenient way to get complete care, encompassing medical and dental.
“A dental care clinical affiliation with our complete medical home model is a natural evolution for our pediatric and adult patient population,” Riverside Co-President Dr. Omar Baker said in a written statement, noting the partnership “will inevitably allow us to optimize managing the population while improving overall public health.”
