DID YOU KNOW: Gum Disease Can Be Linked To Alzheimer’s Disease
Gum disease has long been linked to potentially deadly conditions like heart disease and diabetes – and, more recently, cancer. Now, new research links Alzheimer’s disease to poor dental health.
The Study
Comparing brain samples from 10 people who suffered from dementia with 10 samples from people who didn’t have the disease, researchers found one stark difference. The bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis was consistently found in brain samples of dementia patients, and it’s also a bacterium commonly associated with chronic periodontal disease. In healthy brain samples, the bacterium was absent.
This finding isn’t entirely new, which makes it even more important to consider. In 2010, researchers at New York University also found that gum disease increases a person’s risk of cognitive dysfunction later in life. This latest study from the UK determined that people with long-term, chronic gum disease have a 70% increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia.
