What Does an Orthodontist Do?
An orthodontist is a dental doctor who specializes in correcting misaligned teeth and other teeth and jaw irregularities. If you need orthodontic treatments, an orthodontist from our clinic will start by diagnosing the issue before determining the best treatment options. Together with your orthodontist, you can choose which treatments are used.
Common Orthodontic Treatments
Our most common orthodontic treatments include:
- Adult orthodontics (advanced treatment): With adult orthodontics, you can finally get the beautiful smile that you have always wanted. We will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs and goals.
- Clear or metal braces: Whether you’re looking for a more subtle look with clear braces or want the durability of metal braces, we have the perfect solution for you.
- Clear braces are made of a see-through material that blends in with your natural tooth color, making them nearly invisible. They are a popular choice for adults and teenage patients who want to achieve straight teeth without drawing attention to their orthodontic treatment.
- Metal braces are the most traditional type of braces and are made of high-grade stainless steel. They are strong and durable, making them an excellent choice for patients who need significant dental correction.
- Invisalign®/clear aligner treatment: The Invisalign®/clear aligner treatment system uses a series of clear, customized, and removable aligners that are virtually invisible. They are specifically designed to shift your teeth into place gently and gradually. You'll wear each aligner for approximately two weeks until it's time to switch to the next one in the series. Typically, you're required to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day, and you will need to see your orthodontist every 4-6 weeks for monitoring and adjustments.
Invisalign vs Metal Braces
Choosing between Invisalign and metal braces depends on personal preferences, treatment needs, and lifestyle. Invisalign offers a discreet alternative, using clear aligners that are virtually invisible. They are removable, allowing for easier oral care, eating, and special occasions. Invisalign suits mild to moderate orthodontic issues. On the other hand, metal braces are fixed appliances, effective for various complexities. They are robust, making them suitable for severe misalignments. While metal braces are more noticeable, they are often more cost-effective and require less compliance.
Both options have their advantages, and the decision often boils down to factors like appearance, comfort, and treatment goals. Consulting with our orthodontic professionals can help individuals make an informed choice tailored to their unique needs.
Is There an Ideal Age for Orthodontic Treatment?
Our dentists and orthodontists follow the American Association of Orthodontists recommendation that children should be screened for issues for the first time when upper and lower anterior permanent teeth erupt between 7-9 years old. Orthodontic treatment in most cases will likely begin when the majority or all the permanent teeth erupt, usually between 10-12 years old.
Adult Orthodontic Care
By considering these factors, adults can approach orthodontic treatments with informed expectations, ensuring a more positive and successful experience.
- Treatment Duration: Adult orthodontic treatment may take longer than in younger patients. The complexity of cases, existing dental issues, and the slower pace of adult tooth movement contribute to extended treatment times.
- Treatment Options: While traditional braces are still an option, adults often prefer less conspicuous alternatives like clear aligners or ceramic braces for aesthetic reasons.
- Periodontal Health: Adults are more prone to gum issues, so maintaining optimal periodontal health is crucial before and during orthodontic treatment.
- Orthodontic Challenges: Adults may face additional challenges due to pre-existing dental work, such as crowns or bridges, requiring careful consideration by orthodontic professionals.
- Post-Treatment Stability: Adults may need to wear retainers longer to ensure the stability of their teeth post-treatment, preventing potential relapse.
- Realistic Expectations: Adults should have realistic expectations about the outcome of treatment, understanding that perfection may not always be achievable, but significant improvement is realistic.
- Personal Commitment: Adult orthodontic success often relies on the individual's commitment to oral hygiene, attending appointments, and adhering to the orthodontist's recommendations.
Are Orthodontic Treatments Permanent?
Orthodontic treatments can be long-lasting, but they are not always permanent. For example, teeth can gradually shift back to their original positions after braces are used to correct them. A follow-up set of braces might be necessary to correct the new issue in uncommon cases.

Orthodontics FAQ
Is there an age requirement for braces?
There is no official age limit for braces. However, it's unlikely that a child would need orthodontic treatments before the age of 7 when the alignment of their teeth becomes clearer.
How can I take care of my teeth if I'm wearing braces or a retainer?
If you have braces or a retainer, you still need to regularly take care of your teeth by brushing, flossing, and rinsing. We can recommend specialized toothpaste and toothbrushes for you to use, as well as show you the proper way to gently brush your teeth.
If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?
Braces can sometimes be worn for 24 months before they can be removed. In other cases, some can be worn for as few as 6 months. Each patient’s need for braces is unique.
Do braces hurt?
Braces can cause mild discomfort when they are placed or adjusted. It is rare for braces to cause lingering pain that lasts more than a few days. If it has been a week since your braces were adjusted or placed and you still feel discomfort, please call us at (855) 750-5011.
Can I get braces if I'm missing teeth?
You can get braces if you are missing teeth or have other oral health concerns. We can also discuss the best way to plan for braces while also receiving prosthodontist care to replace the missing tooth.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
The cost for braces and other orthodontic treatments can vary depending on what treatments and braces are required and how long you will need to use them. You can also expect a difference in out-of-pocket costs based on your dental insurance plan, either purchased individually or held as an employment benefit.
Do I have to have insurance to have orthodontic treatment?
It is highly recommended that you use dental insurance to pay for orthodontic treatments. If possible, you should review your benefits to see if you can add orthodontic-specific insurance to your policy. If you don’t have dental insurance that covers orthodontic treatments, speak with a member of our intake team, and we can see what options are available and how we can help.
